Martha Greenway
Early in my career I worked in community mental health, children and family services, and youth justice. These experiences left me with a deep and abiding commitment for systems change to improve outcomes for children, families and communities. I am a holistic, big-picture thinker who can see through details to identify strategic opportunities. I embrace change and love generating ideas for transformational success. My work with Greenway Strategy Group provides the perfect avenue to combine my passion for children, families and communities with my gift for diagnosing and seizing opportunities for systemic improvement.
At Greenway Strategy
As the founder and Client Success Manager for Greenway Strategy, I ensure all our projects are designed, resourced, and managed to meet the unique needs of each client. I also work directly with clients in a variety of roles – acting as project leader, engaging stakeholders and facilitating strategy development. I frequently present strategy development progress and recommendations to key decision-makers including executive leadership, governing boards and external advisory groups.
My ultimate job is bringing the best of Greenway Strategy to match the specific, unique requirements of each client.
Where I’ve created impact
As founder of Greenway Strategy Group, I have leveraged highly-qualified teams to successfully complete more than 100 strategy consulting projects with social impact organizations across the U.S.
I was previously Deputy Superintendent with Fulton County Schools, which serves over 95,000 students from urban, suburban, and rural communities which surround, but are separate from, the City of Atlanta. There I managed the Organizational Advancement functions, which included strategy and performance management, communications, human resources, technology, professional development, student assessment, research and evaluation, policy, and charter schools.
As Vice President of Planning and Policy at United Way of America, I led the first national strategic planning process and provided lead support for the national governing board of corporate and civic leaders. I also led the development of a manual and national training model for local, nonprofit organizations to measure results, Measuring Program Outcomes: A Practical Approach, which is still widely used. This program was awarded the American Society of Public Administration’s Organizational Leadership Award.
I worked collaboratively with the Balanced Scorecard founders Robert Kaplan and David Norton to implement the first application of this tool to the nonprofit sector with the national United Way and led the first application within public education with Fulton County Schools. The Fulton County Schools Balanced Scorecard implementation is featured in a Harvard Business School Case Study, was awarded the Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame, and is featured in the book Strategy Maps published by Harvard University Press.
As Director of Market Research for the United Way of America, I managed national public opinion polls and focus groups on a variety of subjects; and advised national marketing and communications strategy.
I served as an Executive with local United Ways in Columbus, Ohio and Atlanta, Georgia.
Early in my career, I served as a program evaluator with the Ohio Department of Mental Health.
Experiences that inspire me
I previously served as a board chair of Sheltering Arms, a nonprofit organization providing high‐quality early education, child care, and comprehensive family support services to more than 3,000 children and their families in 13 centers across metropolitan Atlanta. My affiliation with Sheltering Arms began in 2009 as a community representative on the Head Start Policy Council.
I am a Graduate and active alumni with Leadership Atlanta.
